Benefits

MEDICAL

Graduate Assistants are required to be on Medical Insurance for the duration of their Appointment.

 

DOMESTIC Graduate Assistants can waive the ISU Student Medical Insurance if you are:

  • An eligible dependent covered by your parents' health insurance.
  • Covered by your own employer-sponsored health insurance.
  • Covered by a spouse or partner's health insurance.
  • Eligible for Medicaid or individual coverage through the federal marketplace.
*Waiver applications must be submitted within the first 30 days of your appointment
**Dependents of domestic Graduate Assistants may enroll their spouse/domestic partner and dependent children at an additional cost to you.

 

INTERNATIONAL Graduate Assistants may be eligible to waive the ISU Student Medical Insurance:

  • Students sponsored by their home government (i.e. Saudi Arabia, Oman, UAE).
  • Approved exchange students with insurance through their home university (i.e. University of Birmingham, Delft University Netherlands).
  • Students who are being sponsored by an approved U.S or International organization (i.e. Fulbright).
  • Students with a visa other than J-1, F-1, J-2, or F-2 (i.e. H-1B, H-4, L-2).
  • Students who have been approved for OPT AND have insurance through their employer.
    • Students on CPT are not allowed to waive the ISU Insurance.

**Dependents accompanying international students MUST be enrolled in the ISU Medical Insurance within 31 days of their arrival to the US at an additional cost to you.

 

DENTAL

Graduate Assistants are eligible to be on Dental Insurance for the duration of their Appointment.

  • Graduate Assistants receive a portion of the Self Only dental insurance premium as a paid benefit of their position.
  • Spouses/Domestic Partners and dependent children can be enrolled at an additional cost to you.

 

WORKDAY

You will receive a Benefits To-Do in workday that should be completed in the first 30 days of your appointment.

Medical Insurance will not have the option to be waived within Workday, you will submit your choices with it selected. The SSHIP office will remove the coverage if your waiver application is approved.

END OF APPOINTMENT

When your Assistantship ends, your paid benefits also end. 

Unless otherwise noted or separation occurs mid-semester:

  • If your appointment ends in the Fall, coverage will continue until December 31. 
  • If your appointment ends in the Spring, coverage will continue until July 31.
  • Students remaining on SSHIP benefits will be charged their premiums on their u-bill.
  • Domestic Students are able to cancel coverage at this time for both medical and dental.
  • Domestic students wishing to continue coverage in SSHIP past an appointment must be enrolled in at least 5 credit hours to be eligible.
  • International Students are able to cancel only Dental as Medical is still required, premiums will be charged to their u-bill.
  • International students must remain enrolled in at least 1 credit hour.
